IMAGO-X1 The Matriarchal Parallel

G. L. Brierley’s ‘Felt’ is the cover and represents the start of something. The attractive and repulsive nature of the oil on this board; what it reflects back begins our journey. In an interview with the artist we delve deeper into the visitations and the arrival of a supernatural being, made of paint. Perhaps it explains being in the enthralled experience of the maternal gaze. It is the absorption and repulsion of projections of the viewer as metaphor in these discussions. The conversation continues. What is this ‘non-thing that we might see?

Who’s doing the looking now? To a different form of devotee of Cora Pearl, her horror of men… to those of Mona Lisa, the painting and the woman. The route through the surface to the phantasy behind and to Da Vinci’s woman. A journey of adoration and of something darker. Of meeting Kali.

Does she take hostage of us or does our use of the canvas beguile us? Is this picture of vanity merely the artist’s mirror.

“Here I Sit …before my Mothers Mirror” is discussed as the conversation of constant re-introductions, and so, back to a negotiation of the notion of our relationships.

Watching the Detectives — 21st century Scandi Noir. Engaging with the current crop of edgy, dysfunctional and brilliant female detectives dominating our tv screens and dreams.

The IMAGO-X Psycho-analiterate reviews and (re)reviews; culture re-examined through a psychoanalytic eye. ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’: Indeed we do! We re-view Scottish Director Lynne Ramsey’s masterful study of ambivalent mothering and attachment gone hideously wrong. We take a pleasurable look at William Rose’s latest novel, ‘The Freedom of the Villainous’ which takes us through the centuries.

Episode#1: “The Freud/Jung Bromance”, concludes our edition with a tongue-in-cheek look at a famous and formational friendship.
